Can Gemini create flashcards?
Yes. Google's help page says you can ask Gemini to create flashcards by starting a prompt with "Create flashcards about" and your topic, optionally attaching files as source material, and it notes an age requirement of 18 or older for flashcards and study guides. That gives you a set of cards in a chat. The page does not describe a long-term review schedule that brings each card back when you are about to forget it.
Cirello adds that part. It runs a hosted remote MCP server, so an MCP-capable Gemini client can create cards in your Cirello library, where FSRS-6 schedules every review.
Which Gemini clients work?
| Client | Status |
|---|---|
| Gemini CLI | Works. Remote MCP servers over Streamable HTTP with OAuth are documented |
| Gemini app (web, then mobile) | Reported, not confirmed. Third-party guides say custom apps from a remote MCP server URL are available under Settings > Connected Apps, in English only. We could not find Google's own documentation for it, so check your account |
| Gemini Enterprise | Admin-configured custom MCP servers over Streamable HTTP are documented, but we have not confirmed a setup that works with Cirello's sign-in, so we do not list it as supported |
Set up Cirello in Gemini CLI
The server address:
https://api.cirello.app/mcp
Add it to ~/.gemini/settings.json (or the project's .gemini/settings.json):
{
"mcpServers": {
"cirello": {
"httpUrl": "https://api.cirello.app/mcp"
}
}
}
httpUrl is the setting for a Streamable HTTP endpoint. Gemini CLI's documentation says that when a server needs OAuth, the CLI discovers the endpoints from the server's metadata and can register itself with dynamic client registration, which Cirello supports. Then, inside Gemini CLI:
- Run
/mcp auth cirello. - Sign in to Cirello in the browser that opens and approve the permissions you want to give.
- Run
/mcpto confirm Cirello is listed with its tools.
The OAuth flow needs a local browser and a localhost redirect, so it will not work on a headless machine or a remote SSH session without port forwarding. Tokens are stored on your machine; re-run /mcp auth cirello if they expire. See the Gemini CLI MCP documentation.
If your Gemini app shows custom apps
If Settings > Connected Apps in the Gemini app has an option to add a custom app from a remote MCP server URL, you can try the address above and sign in when asked. Because Google's own documentation was not available to us, we cannot promise that it works with Cirello, and we do not know which accounts have the option.
What to ask Gemini
- "Turn these notes into small question-and-answer cards in a deck called Chemistry." Up to 50 cards per request.
- "What is due in Cirello today?"
- "Find duplicate cards in my library."
- "Split this card into three."
Skim the cards it creates and remove anything vague; how to write good flashcards is a good checklist. Grades are recorded only for cards you actually tried to answer, and deleting is off unless you allow it.
What stays in Cirello
Your reviews happen in Cirello, scheduled by FSRS-6, with its review modes, drill and exam plans. Your password, email address and account settings are never sent to the assistant. Once data reaches Gemini, Google processes it under its own terms. Disconnect any time in Cirello under Account - Security - Connected apps.
Other assistants
Cirello works the same way with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, Codex CLI and others. The AI flashcards hub lists every client we have checked and the caveats.
Limits to know about
Cirello is a web app today. There are no cloze deletion cards yet. The MCP server is part of the free beta.
